ARLENE SILBERSTEIN
The visual arts involve more than simply making a visual image. It is a complex
mental, physiological and emotional exercise. Since it involves using the intellect
plus all the senses, both sides of the brain function in harmony and produce a
mode of thinking that is analytic, imaginative and creative, where many possible
alternatives to the final statement are considered. This mode of thinking is applicable
to every subject addressed in the school curriculum. For this reason I believe
that art should be an integral part of the educational system. In painting or
drawing any number of outcomes can be correct. In fact, there is real joy in the
discovery, which is not only it's own reward but provides the urge for continuing
and discovery.
