JOAN DUNKLE
My art is intuitive- concerned with the magic of transformation, reflecting my
inquisitiveness and curiosity of “what if”. Being an experimenter at heart and
in search of the unpredictable, I have never set boundaries for myself or my art.
Along with acrylic and oil pigments, the materials I use include paper of various
thicknesses, perhaps a painting, monoprint, or sketch from my recycle bin. I might
use metal, particularly copper, fragments of wood, powdered pigments, pencil and
charcoal. My collages are created from music, to numerals, to letters, to found
objects unifying the material world with a personal world…thus giving my work
a personal presence by using elements derived from my own experiences. The letters,
numerals and fragments of printed text also contribute to the visual image that
gives my work a sense of mystery and excitement. I enjoy employing the entire
arsenal of painterly ammunition, including scrawls, splashes, spills and drips
to enhance the composition and fill it with a sense of movement and flux. There
are layers of over painting and heavily textured grounds that have been built
up. Like my sculptures, I build my paintings.
Today, I would be considered a “non-representational” artiest, but for many years
I was a “traditionalist” trained in academia. Thus, I was able to create meticulous
paintings, drawing and sculpture following the rules of academic training. However,
I have never abandoned my love and interest in exploring both the two-dimensional
and three-dimensional surfaces. Throughout my art career I have moved comfortable
between the two- each time bringing something new to my work. I am not one to
remain stagnant!
There is an element of mystery to my work. I never wish to reveal or say to much.
Certain images, some of which are more recognizable than others, encourage the
viewer to explore and interpret for themselves which allows them to be a major
participant in the creative process…thus the viewer actually completes the piece
leaving my work open to interpretation.
